What is a QR Code?

Quick Response (QR) Code | Definition

A quick response (QR) code is a type of scannable barcode that contains information (eg, a website URL, app store URL, or app deep link) stored within a pixel array often formed into a square, although other shapes are becoming more common. Nearly all modern smartphones have a built-in QR code detector within the native camera app, enabling consumers to point their phone at the QR code and be instantly taking to a destination on web or in-app.

How are QR codes used?

Labeling of many consumer packaged goods (CPG), food service packaging, in-store signage, out-of-home (OOH) displays, and beyond utilize quick response codes to provide a quick response mechanism for consumers to learn more about a product, redeem a special offer, download an app, etc. QR codes witnessed an explosion in use amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, due to a growing need for contactless engagement and payment.

QR codes are popular in mobile advertising to drive consumers directly to a mobile app or mobile website to perform a conversion. Learn more about using QR codes in your advertising with the help of Kochava SmartLinks.
